Treviso Guide
The tourist who chooses Treviso and the Marca Trevigiana for a day trip, a weekend or a longer stay will never be disappointed by its many beautiful sights and interesting itineraries. One can only feel amazed by its beauty and cannot help growing fond of it. The Marca Trevigiana is the birthplace of the painters Cima da Conegliano and Giorgione, of Antonio Canova and, more recently, of Arturo Martini, Guido Rossi and Giovanni Barbisan, who have all left vigorous traces of their presence both on the territory and the museums. Palladio worked here, and here he conceived and built some of his most remarkable villas, architectural masterpieces of all times. Here you can see the testimonies of faith and religious culture, expressed in the imposing frescoed churches, but also in the abbeys, sanctuaries and parish churches, in the often extremely ancient country and hill oratories that you can see everywhere. Finally the Marca has incomparable ancient towns, walled citadels and villages with typical stone houses, imposing castles and gentry palaces. But the Marca Trevigiana not only has history to offer, it also has unspoilt nature and breathtaking landscapes, within a territory that in few kilometres connects the Prealpi mountain range to the Venetian lagoon. Water abounds and flows everywhere, making this land fertile and rich in valuable cultivations, such as vineyards (white wine in the hills and red wine in the plane) or specialities such as the red chicory. The local gastronomy has obviously been inspired by such generous nature, resulting in the harmonious encounter between tradition and innovation. The famous hills of the Marca Trevigiana, that go all the way from Asolo to Valdobbiadene and Vittorio Veneto, offer a wide range of leisure activities. In the province of Treviso hotels and touristic facilities suitable for all kinds of people happily meet the well known sense of hospitality of its operators and inhabitants: it can thus be visited all year round, offering its union of history and everchanging and fascinating scenery.
Before getting to Treviso and to Asolo is compulsory to stop at Maser to visit Villa Barbaro (1560), one of Palladio's greatest masterpieces. Inside it, there are the famous Paolo Veronese's frescoes, and behind it there is an annexed Museum of ancient coaches. It is a also worth mentioning the Villa's little church, also by Palladio, a genial re-invention of the classic Pantheon.
Not far from Asolo (just 10 km), at the feet of the mountains, lies Possagno, where Antonio Canova was born. The Tempio Canoviano (once a church built in the years 1819-1830), overlooks the small town and holds art by Canova himself, by Luca Giordano and Palma il Giovane. In the centre of Possagno there is Canova's house, and next to it the Plaster Cast Gallery (Gipsoteca), with its whealth of material from the artist's Rome study. The present lay-out is partly due to the work of the architect Carlo Scarpa, who has designed one of the best examples of modern museography.
In the west direction from Treviso there is Castelfranco. This fortified citadel is Giorgione's birthplace. The Cathedral has a magnificent altar piece (a Madonna with Holy Child, between S. Liberale and S. Francesco, approx. 1506). There are also some decorations attributed to the painter in the so called "Casa Giorgione". This town has not lost its medieval charm: part of city's walls and some towers are well preserved, and most of its pallazzos are still there with their arcades and little shops. This town boasts a little but well known School of Music (Conservatorio) located in front of the Teatro Accedemico.
The area around Treviso is called Marca Trevigiana> and its famous not only for its artistic and natural beauties but also for its food and wine. Along the Piave Wine Route its possible to sample the quality red and white wines of the region: Cabernet, Merlot, Raboso del Piave for the reds and the Verduzzo and Tocai for the whites. At Conegliano you can taste the worldwide famous Prosecco of which Conegliano is the main production center. From the fortress of Conegliano one can view this lovely town and its gently rolling hills, its churches and nearby castle of San Salvatore. This fascinating scenery is also found in the pictorical works of Cima da Conegliano who took inspiration from the landscape of his native land. To the North, the Meschio valley leads to Pre-Alpine territory, to Cedena and Serravalle, the ancient neighbourhoods that form the old-town centre of Vittorio Veneto, a city forever linked to memories of the victorious battle fought in its district during the 1st World War.
