Getting there

Getting there

Catania is the second city in Sicily and it is well served by highways and trains and moreover has an international airport.
  • By car: From Palermo take highway A19 Palermo-Catania up to destination (209 Km). From Agrigento take state highway 640 for Caltanisetta and then continue on highway A19 up to Catania (165 Km). From Siracusa follow state highway 114 up to Catania (62 Km). Those coming from Continental Italy must take highway A3 Salerno-Reggio Calabria and exit on Villa San Giovanni to get to the ferries that go to Messina. From Messina, highway A18 takes you to Catania. Catania's traffic is heavy and chaotic, it would be best to leave your car in a supervised parking lot and visit the city on foot or with public transport.

  • By train: Catania is connected by trains to all the major destination in Sicily, such as Taormina, Palermo and Siracusa. For some destinations it is necessary to change trains. From Rome there are some direct trains to Catania (via Naples), the trip lasts about 10 hours. For times consult the Trenitalia site or call the green number 89 20 21. From Catania Borgo station leaves Ferrovia Circumetnea (no service on Sundays and holidays) offering a magnificent journey around Etna (about a 3-hour trip).

  • By plane: The nearest stop is the International Airport of Catania (CTA), offering connections to major Italian and European airports, including all the capitals. From the airport, the Alibus shuttle service goes to the center of Catania every 20 minutes.
